Rob Fastenau, dean

The Executive Board has appointed Rob Fastenau as the new Dean of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science as of 1 January 2011. He succeeds Professor Daan Lenstra, who retired on 1 November 2011.

Rob Fastenau studied Physics at TU Delft where he gained his doctorate in 1982. After his doctorate he worked as researcher and research group leader at Philips Research in Eindhoven and in Sunnyvale, California. In 1995 he transferred to Philips Electron Optics, which later merged with FEI Company. For the past ten years he served on the board of directors at FEI Company, market leader in electron microscopes. During that time FEI expanded greatly, not in the least because of its fast-paced, successful product innovation.

Rob Fastenau has an extensive network within academic research circles in the fields of material sciences and life sciences. He was among other things closely involved with the foundation of the extensive microscopy group at KAUST University in Saudi Arabia and of NeCEN, the Netherlands Centre for Nanoscopy. He also maintains close relations with high tech companies in the semiconductor and other industries. He co-founded the High Tech Systems Platform and is an executive board member of innovation programmes Point-One and of the Center for Translational Molecular Medicine (CTMM).

The Executive Board is very pleased with the appointment of Rob Fastenau, who has almost 30 years of experience in both research and management in high tech industry.
